Continuing the Spirit of Selfless Service

From Director/CEO Tom Shull Fifteen years ago, the world witnessed unprecedented destruction in New York City and Washington, D.C. In the ensuing months and years, Exchange associates have served with Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors and Marines, exemplifying our motto—We Go Where You Go. On that September morning, then-Washington Office Director Bob Ellis was waiting for a meeting when he heard a loud explosion. American Airlines Flight 77 had struck the Pentagon. As the world panicked, Bob did what Exchange associates do—he focused on our troops. Eight Great Ways to Engage Shoppers During Product Demos

Going into Exchanges with his Air Force father, Ricky Cabral loved seeing products being demonstrated. Years later, his managers at Japan’s Yokota AB now say the Exchange hardlines supervisor elevated product demonstration to an art form. During a commissary healthy life-style event, Cabral’s product demos sold nearly $1,200 in SodaStreams, Vitamixes, George Foreman grills, and a Seiki 32 inch TV. “By conducting demos, we were able to sell more than 60 Phillips Air Fryers, and had to request more from surrounding Exchanges to meet customer demand,” Cabral said. “For those customers, it was unbelievable until they saw the appliance in action.” I love doing the demos due in large part to the level of customer satisfaction that is expressed and… Keep Reading

Work Bucket List Accomplished, I am Leaving the Exchange in Capable Hands

I remember that day in 2006 when I was named to my dream job: chief operating officer of the world’s greatest retail organization. My “work bucket list” included many things I wanted to accomplish as the Exchange’s senior civilian leader: increase earnings, build future leaders, boost productivity, improve customer and associate satisfaction, control inventory, take care of our people. Now that I am winding down my 44 years with the Exchange, I can safely say that I’ve accomplished everything on that list, thanks to the hard-working managers and associates in the field and dedicated teams at headquarters. Priscilla Sangalang Overseas Region/Andersen AFB, Guam Great customer service was recognized today by Air Force Maj. Butler stationed here on Andersen AFB. He said that Priscilla’s customer service is exceptional. Every time he comes shopping at our store, she provides outstanding customer service from entering the store until he checks out. She never rushes through his shopping, stays with him until all items are found. “She just makes me feel like I am the only important customer in the store,” Maj. Butler says. 15 Years Later, Vivid Memories Remain from Serving Downrange Warfighters

Since the 9/11 terror attacks, more than 4,500 associates have deployed voluntarily to Southwest Asia and the Middle East to serve troops fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq. They returned home with amazing tales of the sights, smells and dangers in lands most Americans only saw on TV. From Ground Zero to Iraq Take Steve Williams, for example. As then-manager of Brooklyn’s Fort Hamilton Exchange, Williams engineered the set-up of mobile exchanges at the World Trade Center and elsewhere in New York to serve thousands of first responders. Celebrating Legacies, Looking Toward Our Future Leaders

Two valued team members, our Chief Financial Officer Renee Figge and President/Chief Operating Officer Mike Howard, are readying to enjoy the rewards of the Exchange’s unmatched deferred compensation plan as they embark on new journeys in retirement. Originally a management trainee, Renee dedicated three decades to protecting and preserving the Exchange’s fiscal health in our Finance and Accounting Directorate. Two decades ago, Renee was an integral member of the design, development and implementation of the Integrated General Ledger Accounting System (IGLAS), which is still in use today. Navigating the downturn Renee was our treasurer during last decade’s financial crisis. She helped the Exchange successfully navigate the worst economic downturn since the great depression.
