Some types require whole-day fasts, but the most popular\u2014and most doable for real life\u2014is time-restricted feeding, where you fast for 16 to 20 hours, then eat whatever you want in a four- to eight-hour&nbsp;window.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What the research says<\/strong>: Intermittent&nbsp;Fasting&nbsp;(IF) will help you lose&nbsp;fat&nbsp;and maintain&nbsp;strength&nbsp;at least as well as counting&nbsp;calories, says a 2017 study analysis in&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/jissn.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12970-017-0174-y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-aesra-score=\"linkNewWindowWarning:1;\">JISSN<\/a><\/em>. Another study in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamainternalmedicine\/article-abstract\/2623528?redirect=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>JAMA Internal Medicine<\/em>&nbsp;<\/a>found people who ate whatever they wanted, but every other day, lost 6 percent of their&nbsp;body&nbsp;weight&nbsp;over one year\u2014about the same as those who restricted their daily&nbsp;calorie&nbsp;count.<\/p>\n<p>Some studies suggest IF may actually&nbsp;work&nbsp;better than&nbsp;calorie&nbsp;tracking, like one 2016 paper in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/translational-medicine.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12967-016-1044-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-aesra-score=\"linkNewWindowWarning:1;\"><em>Journal of Translational Medicine<\/em><span class=\"ae-compliance-indent\">s&nbsp;<\/span><\/a>which reports fit folks who only ate within an eight-hour&nbsp;window&nbsp;lost more&nbsp;fat&nbsp;and maintained more&nbsp;muscle&nbsp;than those who ate the same number of&nbsp;calories&nbsp;over 12 hours instead.<\/p>\n<p>Outside of&nbsp;body&nbsp;comp, studies show&nbsp;fasting&nbsp;for periods can&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26374764\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-aesra-score=\"linkNewWindowWarning:1;\">improve<\/a>&nbsp;your cholesterol and triglycerides,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27899768\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-aesra-score=\"linkNewWindowWarning:1;\">help control.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The pros<\/strong>: The only rule of intermittent&nbsp;fasting&nbsp;is you stop chewing when the clock strikes&nbsp;fasting&nbsp;time, so it\u2019s really easy to follow. And because IF doesn\u2019t ban any foods, it\u2019s an easy way to cut&nbsp;calories&nbsp;without obsessing over everything you put in your mouth or feeling deprived.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you have less time to eat, you will eat fewer&nbsp;calories,\u201d says DJ Blatner, RD, nutritionist for the&nbsp;Chicago CUBS&nbsp;and author of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Superfood-Swap-Without-C-R-P\/dp\/0544535553\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-aesra-score=\"linkNewWindowWarning:1;\"><em>The Superfood Swap<\/em>.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The best&nbsp;part&nbsp;of IF is you can make it&nbsp;work&nbsp;for any schedule, picking whichever hours to feed and fast that fit your life, she adds. (Psst: If a 16-hour fast freaks you out, start with 12 hours on, 12 off\u2014a kind of IF&nbsp;light, suggests Blatner.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>The cons<\/strong>: Research shows almost no downsides to IF, but Blatner&nbsp;points&nbsp;out that the free-for-all feed&nbsp;window&nbsp;can be a green&nbsp;light&nbsp;for unhealthy choices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFood isn\u2019t just about&nbsp;calories&nbsp;and&nbsp;weight. It\u2019s also about quality of&nbsp;nutrients&nbsp;to protect us against disease and, for guys who are working out, to help with&nbsp;muscle repair&nbsp;and&nbsp;recovery,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n<p>If you can keep your&nbsp;nutrients&nbsp;up and the junk down, the biggest drawback is really just irritability for the first couple of days or mornings you\u2019re fasting\u2014but that\u2019ll go away as your&nbsp;body&nbsp;gets used to the schedule.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who it\u2019s best for<\/strong>: IF is a great option for any guy who wants to shed&nbsp;fat, regardless of their&nbsp;training&nbsp;methodology, Blatner says. The&nbsp;diet&nbsp;involves an elimination phase of foods like apples, wheat,&nbsp;honey, onions, and&nbsp;garlic, and then a reintroduction period where you slowly test which foods your&nbsp;body&nbsp;reacts negatively to. You then keep the offenders out of your&nbsp;diet&nbsp;long term to avoid GI distress.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What the research says<\/strong>: It helps reduce GI distress in people who have issues with bloating, cramping, and diarrhea\/constipation but aren\u2019t actually&nbsp;gluten&nbsp;sensitive, confirms a recent study in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/30158962\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-aesra-score=\"linkNewWindowWarning:1;\"><em>&nbsp;Gastroenterology Research and Practice.<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;A small study earlier this year out of Australia&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28891824\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-aesra-score=\"linkNewWindowWarning:1;\">found&nbsp;<\/a>endurance&nbsp;runners had less flatulence and loose&nbsp;stool&nbsp;when they avoided FODMAPs for just six days, compared to a&nbsp;diet&nbsp;high in the hard-to-digest&nbsp;carbs. And in a survey of over 900 athletes, published in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27507006\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-aesra-score=\"linkNewWindowWarning:1;\"><em>Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism<\/em><\/a>, 83 percent of people who eliminated at least one high-FODMAP&nbsp;food&nbsp;saw&nbsp;their GI symptoms improve.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The pros<\/strong>: Issues like diarrhea, bloating, and&nbsp;gas&nbsp;can be a big problem with athletes, in particular runners, and, aside from being uncomfortable, these can also get in the way of&nbsp;performance, explains gut&nbsp;health&nbsp;nutritionist, Danielle Capalino, RD, author of the forthcoming&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Healthy-Gut-Flat-Stomach-Drinks\/dp\/1682683176\/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1541696976&amp;sr=8-6&amp;keywords=danielle+capalino\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-aesra-score=\"linkNewWindowWarning:1;\"><em>Healthy Gut, Flat Stomach: Drinks<\/em><\/a>. A low-FODMAP&nbsp;diet&nbsp;can help reduce symptoms, allowing you to perform optimally and improve the appearance of a belly distended from&nbsp;gas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The cons<\/strong>: The biggest risk of a low-FODMAP&nbsp;diet&nbsp;is not getting enough&nbsp;nutrients&nbsp;and exacerbating disordered eating, says&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5390324\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-aesra-score=\"linkNewWindowWarning:1;\">an Australian analysis<\/a>. A lot of fueling favorites are high in FODMAPs, like apples, mangoes, asparagus, brussels sprouts, and cauliflower\u2014but there are plenty low in the molecules, too, Capalino&nbsp;points&nbsp;out. You just have to incorporate more low-FODMAP produce, like&nbsp;bananas, blueberries, oranges, potatoes, and carrots, while eliminating the high ones.<\/p>\n<p>The other biggest downside is avoiding the&nbsp;carbs&nbsp;makes cooking and eating out more complicated. One potential fix: A recent study in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29964041\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-aesra-score=\"linkNewWindowWarning:1;\"><em>Gastroenterology<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;found a low-FODMAP&nbsp;diet&nbsp;works about as well as regularly taking a prebiotic, so if you\u2019re not ready to give up your favorite foods just yet, you can try four weeks of a daily prebiotic first.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who it\u2019s best for<\/strong>:&nbsp;Endurance&nbsp;athletes. A study in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healio.com\/gastroenterology\/intestinal-disorders\/news\/online\/%7B7847f64b-32b3-49eb-99da-968daa15ec1d%7D\/too-much-exercise-can-cause-acute-chronic-gi-issues\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-aesra-score=\"linkNewWindowWarning:1;\"><em>Alimentary Pharmacology &amp; Therapeutics&nbsp;<\/em><span class=\"ae-compliance-indent\">too much exercise can cause acute chronic gi issues&nbsp;<\/span><\/a>reports long bouts of&nbsp;exercise&nbsp;actually compromise gut integrity\u2014specifically, working at 60 percent of VO2Max for at least two hours can cause the gut to become more leaky and GI symptoms to develop or worsen. This may be even more true when comparing veganism against most current fad diets: A recent, large study in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanpub\/article\/PIIS2468-2667(18)30135-X\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-aesra-score=\"linkNewWindowWarning:1;\"><em>The Lancet&nbsp;<\/em><\/a>found people who cut&nbsp;carbs&nbsp;and upped their&nbsp;animal intake&nbsp;had a higher mortality rate than folks who eat more plant-based foods.<\/p>\n<p>And despite the bad rap of&nbsp;plant&nbsp;protein, 2017 research in the<a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/ajcn\/article\/105\/3\/714\/4569695\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-aesra-score=\"linkNewWindowWarning:1;\"><em>American Journal of Clinical Nutrition&nbsp;<\/em><\/a>reports that as long as men and women were getting at least the recommended daily allowance of&nbsp;protein&nbsp;(that&#8217;s 0.8 g\/kg of&nbsp;body&nbsp;weight), carnivores and omnivores had roughly the same&nbsp;muscle&nbsp;mass and&nbsp;strength.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, research in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27854281\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-aesra-score=\"linkNewWindowWarning:1;\"><em>Nutrients<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;found among&nbsp;endurance&nbsp;athletes, fueling with plants or animals landed athletes with pretty much the same&nbsp;body&nbsp;composition and quality of&nbsp;physical&nbsp;performance, with carnivores clocking slightly more visceral, belly&nbsp;fat&nbsp;and omnivores logging a slightly better VO2max and comparable&nbsp;strength.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The pros<\/strong>: \u201cPlant&nbsp;protein&nbsp;when eaten straight from the source comes packed with&nbsp;fiber&nbsp;and phytochemical\u2014two of the most influential compounds for long-term&nbsp;health,\u201d says Matt Ruscigno, RD, co-author of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/No-Meat-Athlete-Discover-Happiest\/dp\/1592335780\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-aesra-score=\"linkNewWindowWarning:1;\"><em>No Meat Athlete<\/em><\/a>. Looking at the research, it\u2019s clear those who eat more fruits,&nbsp;vegetables, whole&nbsp;grains, and legumes have lower rates of every major chronic disease. \u201cOptimal&nbsp;nutrition&nbsp;for athletes is about more than&nbsp;performance; it also includes long term&nbsp;health,\u201d Ruscigno adds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Cons:<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201cIt\u2019s crucial for athletes to consume enough&nbsp;protein&nbsp;to maintain&nbsp;muscle&nbsp;turnover,\u201d says Ruscigno.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24015719\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-aesra-score=\"linkNewWindowWarning:1;\">Some studies suggest&nbsp;<\/a>vegans may need to eat more of the macro to achieve the same results they&#8217;d get from the&nbsp;animal&nbsp;variety like&nbsp;whey, but Ruscigno adds that, aside from&nbsp;strength&nbsp;athletes, a lot of guys underestimate their&nbsp;protein&nbsp;consumption.<\/p>\n<p>The main worry isn\u2019t in getting enough&nbsp;protein, but instead scoring it with within your daily&nbsp;calorie&nbsp;count, says&nbsp;sports&nbsp;nutritionist&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eatsleep.fit\/about-me\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-aesra-score=\"linkNewWindowWarning:1;\">Jeff Rothschild, RD<\/a>. Since most&nbsp;vegan&nbsp;sources of the macro are also higher in&nbsp;calories, it can be hard to be a calorie-restricted&nbsp;vegan&nbsp;without relying heavily on a lot of supplemental&nbsp;protein&nbsp;powders, he&nbsp;points&nbsp;out. Since&nbsp;powders&nbsp;are more likely to accumulate toxic metals like arsenic, mercury, and&nbsp;pesticides, you want to&nbsp;stay&nbsp;within just one scoop a day.
