And yet, 31 million Americans (28% of whom are men ages 18-34) don\u2019t eat a morning meal, according to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npd.com\/wps\/portal\/npd\/us\/news\/press-releases\/pr_111011b\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-aesra-score=\"linkNewWindowWarning:1;\">study<\/a>\u00a0conducted by NPD Group, a marketing research company.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most common reasons people skip breakfast is because they\u2019re just not hungry in the morning, says<a href=\"http:\/\/draxe.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-aesra-score=\"linkNewWindowWarning:1;\">\u00a0Josh<\/a>, D.N.M., a\u00a0board-certified doctor of natural medicine and nutrition specialist. If you can relate, Axe suggests trying to start small with a liquid shake or\u00a0healthy smoothie, keeping your dinner smaller, and cutting back on alcohol or snacks right before bed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor a\u00a0healthy breakfast, most people will do best eating a combination of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mensjournal.com\/tag\/protein-foods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-aesra-score=\"linkNewWindowWarning:1;\">protein<\/a>\u00a0and good\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mensjournal.com\/tag\/good-fats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-aesra-score=\"linkNewWindowWarning:1;\">fats<\/a>\u00a0first thing in the morning\u2014like eggs and avocado, both of which keep you satisfied for longer and help prevent low blood sugar fluctuations,\u201d Axe says. Most experts, he adds, suggest eating between 300-500 calories for breakfast, ideally within an hour or two after waking up. Avoid the drive-through, though\u2014homemade breakfasts tend to be healthier.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2015\/07\/150701123350.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-aesra-score=\"linkNewWindowWarning:1;\">Research<\/a>\u00a0from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign\u00a0found meals eaten in restaurants are usually significantly higher in total calories and hydrogenated fats, but lower in percentage of calories from protein, complex\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mensjournal.com\/tag\/carb-foods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-aesra-score=\"linkNewWindowWarning:1;\">carbohydrates<\/a>, and fiber than those eaten at home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWatch the liquid calories, which include fruit juices or sweetened coffee drinks,\u201d Axe says. \u201cThese are usually packed with sugar but provide little to no fiber, protein, and complex carbs to keep you fueled. If you are going to include carbohydrates with your breakfast, make it a low-glycemic kind like berries, plain rolled oats,\u00a0sprouted whole grain bread, or sweet potato hash browns.\u201d And for the most part, avoid\u00a0muffins, bagels, scones, and some packaged granola bars. They may seem healthy, but they\u2019re more like dessert than breakfast.<\/p>\n<p>Need more inspiration to make a habit of eating a morning meal? Just read through to find out exactly what happens in your body when you skip breakfast.<\/p>\n<h2>Your blood sugar drops<\/h2>\n<p>Research published in the\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3737458\/\">Journal of Frontiers of Human Nueroscience<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>shows that eating breakfast helps restore glycogen and stabilizes levels of insulin.\u00a0If you don\u2019t replenish your glucose stores in the morning, it\u2019ll leave you feeling overly hungry, cranky, and fatigued. (Yes, being \u201changry\u201d is a real health problem.)\u00a0\u201cThese low blood-sugar symptoms are the first thing you\u2019re likely to experience from fasting all-night long,\u201d Axe says.<\/p>\n<h2>Your metabolism slows<\/h2>\n<p>There\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/ijo2012229.epdf?referrer_access_token=ouSyg7tq4F4iMhWrezJyZtRgN0jAjWel9jnR3ZoTv0OoXMYxeUF5K1SF8LoOyYhWHpTWbYAprLsgGQpZUO-8dR4n6jSejGV6nB0u2gabBQo8SuLxUDAwVxVHwi-3JuCLY8Zm7NOPEIPOWPCyP40SkazarOUiA5wnLIDGkQLjCxuQV4q8SyDX1_53IZmKP8W9gl72nbR7sK1Ir0CH1hbjuH5DCzOrs7izttb-HdI9os0EC7QjuQHpKq_W6Ruia5Uy&amp;tracking_referrer=www.npr.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-aesra-score=\"linkNewWindowWarning:1;\">evidence\u00a0<\/a>that an early meal can stoke your metabolism and encourage your body to burn more calories throughout the day, according to the\u00a0<em>International Journal of Obesity<\/em>. When you fast for too long,\u00a0your body goes into protection mode, and begins to store as many calories as possible (think bears preparing for hibernation). \u201cAs a negative double whammy, when your metabolism slows, it can turn to the glucose stored in your muscles as a backup fuel source, effectively wasting away your muscles,\u201d Axe adds.<\/p>\n<h2>Your stress hormones skyrocket<\/h2>\n<p>Breakfast has a positive effect on cortisol, one of the primary \u201cstress hormones\u201d produced by the adrenal glands, according to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/easacademy.org\/trainer-resources\/article\/why-breakfast-is-the-most-important-meal-of-the-day-eas-academy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-aesra-score=\"linkNewWindowWarning:1;\">research<\/a>\u00a0from the University of Texas at Austin. Cortisol has many functions including helping the body use sugar (glucose) and fat for energy and managing stress. \u201cNormally, cortisol levels are highest about 7 a.m., so this is when it\u2019s important to eat something to bring them back down,\u201d Axe says. \u201cIf cortisol levels remain elevated, you\u2019re likely to feel anxious or jittery.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Your heart takes a hit<\/h2>\n<p>Regularly skipping breakfast can make you more susceptible to weight gain and increase your risk for heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes, according to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom.heart.org\/news\/skipping-breakfast-may-increase-coronary-heart-disease-risk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-aesra-score=\"linkNewWindowWarning:1;\">a<span class=\"ae-compliance-indent ae-new-window\" data-ae-pem-ignore=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom.heart.org\/news\/skipping-breakfast-may-increase-coronary-heart-disease-risk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-aesra-score=\"linkNewWindowWarning:1;\">press release<\/a>\u00a0from the American Heart Association.
