What You Need to Know About Exchange ESSO Card Changes for Travel Season

Grafenwoehr, Germany – With the summer travel season in full swing, it’s important for Exchange ESSO cardholders to be aware of changes within the ESSO gas station network to avoid having to pay economy rate.

More than 220 OMV gas stations in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg will be rebranding to ESSO in 2024, meaning Exchange ESSO cardholders in Germany will have more than 1,200 locations where they can fuel up tax-free.

As the new locations come online, there will be a temporary delay in accepting Exchange ESSO fuel ration cards. Cardholders must check with the ESSO station attendant before filling up to confirm the station can accept Exchange tax-free ESSO fuel ration cards.

Cardholders should be sure to say “Exchange tax-free ESSO fuel ration card” to avoid confusion with German ESSO fleet cards, especially when traveling, as attendants at ESSO stations that are not near U.S. military bases may be unfamiliar with the military’s ESSO program.

Existing ESSO stations in Germany will not be affected by the changes and will continue to accept the Exchange ESSO fuel ration cards.

The ongoing addition of ESSO locations is an important benefit to military personnel and authorized cardholders and will provide greater convenience and more options for the summer travel season within Germany.

Social-media-friendly version: Check before you pump at unfamiliar ESSO stations to ensure your Exchange ESSO card is accepted. ESSO is adding 223 new locations by acquiring OMV gas stations. During this transition, the new locations will temporarily be unable to accept Exchange-issued ESSO cards. In the meantime, check with each station before filling up to avoid paying the economy rate.
