DALLAS – As part of the Army & Air Force Exchange Service’s commitment to providing tastes of home no matter the location, unattended retail units (URU) provide fast, convenient options to installations worldwide.
The self-serve stores offer an assortment found in most Expresses, including snacks, drinks, fresh fruit, ready-to-eat meals, toiletries and more.
“Unattended retail units are an important option to provide to military communities,” said Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Rich Martinez, the Exchange’s senior enlisted advisor. “Supplementing PXs and BXs with quick, easy and round-the-clock options where access to the main Exchange or Express can be limited means tastes of home are never out of reach.”
URUs are an important Quality-of-Life improvement, especially at smaller installations, inside barracks, hospitals and large headquarters, providing increased 24/7 access for service members, families and other installation personnel.
Along with easy self-checkouts, many URUs also offer in-unit microwaves to heat frozen and refrigerated meals. URUs are often added in common areas, giving shoppers a quality way to enjoy downtime when other Exchange offerings are unavailable or far away.
The Exchange now operates more than 600 URUs worldwide, with nearly 200 opening in 2024. More are planned for CONUS and OCONUS in 2025.
