Airmen can now tap into free high-speed Wi-Fi in dormitories at 25 Air Force bases with more installations scheduled to come online, through a deal with internet provider Boingo Wireless.<\/p>\n
The contract, run by the Army & Air Force Exchange Service, taps into Boingo\u2019s existing Wi-Fi infrastructure at bases across the U.S., plus one in Japan, according to an Oct. 29 announcement from Boingo.<\/p>\n

Currently, free Wi-Fi is available in dorms at 25 installations, according to an AAFES spokesperson:<\/p>\n

The AAFES spokesperson added that Wi-Fi will also soon be available at Holloman Air Force Base, N.M. Holloman still requires network configuration and service \u201cis expected to be available within 30 to 45 days after the memorandum of agreement is executed,\u201d the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s unclear what other installations will get free Wi-Fi in the future under the Boingo contract, but the telecommunications firm\u2019s announcement states that the deal includes \u201cadditional site deployments systematically underway to expand coverage.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cStaying connected to family and friends makes a difference in Airmen\u2019s daily lives and helps them stay mission ready,\u201d Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Angela Holden, AAFES\u2019 senior enlisted advisor, said in Boingo\u2019s announcement. \u201cThis initiative is one more way the Exchange supports quality of life for Airmen while helping them feel more at home in their dorms.\u201d<\/p>\n
The AAFES contract with Boingo fulfills congressional guidance for the services to provide free Wi-Fi for service members that appeared in the 2025 National Defense Authorization Act.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Secretary of a military department may provide, to a member of the armed forces who resides in military unaccompanied housing (as defined in section 2871 of this title) within the United States, broadband internet access service, at no cost to such member,\u201d according to the legislation.<\/p>\n
The Air Force has acknowledged in the past that access to the internet is an essential tool for continued learning. \u201cIt would not be a blanket statement to say the whole Air Force [now] understands that \u2026 Wi-Fi is a necessity, as opposed to a convenience,\u201d Lt.
