HURLBURT FIELD<\/strong> \u2013 When Gordon Goetz found out he was the second-prize winner of the Army & Air Force Exchange Service\u2019s worldwide You Made the Grade sweepstakes, he couldn\u2019t believe his luck.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy first thought was \u2018oh my gosh,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cThis has never happened to me before.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gordon received his prize<\/a>, a $1,500 Exchange gift card, at a presentation July 26 at the Hurlburt Field Exchange.<\/p>\n

\u201cGordon is a bright student, and the Exchange is honored to recognize his academic achievement,\u201d said Hurlburt Field Exchange General Manager Myra Florence. \u201cHis resilience and determination make him an inspiration to military children around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

First- through 12th-graders who maintain a B average or higher can enter the sweepstakes for a chance at a $2,000, $1,500 or $500 Exchange gift card. Gordon was randomly selected<\/a> from more than 1,000 entries.<\/p>\n

Gordon, 12, is the oldest son of retired Marine Corps Master Sgt. Gordon R. Goetz and wife Tetyana. Master Sgt. Goetz served 21 years, deploying to Kuwait and Iraq as part Desert Storm as well as Beirut before retiring in 1997.<\/p>\n

Gordon and his brother Grant, 7, both entered the sweepstakes<\/a> after an associate at the Hurlburt Field Exchange informed the family about the contest.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was the third or fourth time we\u2019ve entered,\u201d Master Sgt. Goetz said. \u201c[Gordon\u2019s win] was a nice surprise.\u201d<\/p>\n

Besides excelling in academics, Gordon has a passion for sports and computers. His favorite activities include golf, playing video games, watching YouTube\u2014and researching his favorite scientific topics.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m really interested in atomic and nuclear science,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019d like to get a new computer and monitor [with my prize money].\u201d<\/p>\n

But first, Gordon has something generous in mind.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to get something for my little brother,\u201d he said. \u201cHe\u2019s always been there for me.\u201d<\/p>\n
