SAN DIEGO \u2013 <\/strong>A Presidio of Monterey Soldier<\/a> leveled up to victory at TwitchCon 2019\u2019s \u201cStreet Fighter V\u201d tournament, highlighting Army Installation Management Command (IMCOM) Family and MWR Program’s effort to provide healthy recreational and leisure activities for Soldiers while building skills they can utilize while serving our nation.<\/p>\n

Sgt. Dominic Ramirez of Bravo Company, 229th Military Intelligence Battalion took home the grand prize\u2014a $500 Army & Air Force Exchange Service gift card and a Gaemz prize package\u2014on Sept. 27 at TwitchCon, an annual convention that celebrates gaming and esports.<\/p>\n

\"\"\u201cChristmas is coming up\u2014this will help,\u201d Ramirez said of his prize.<\/p>\n

Ramirez earned his trip to TwitchCon after winning a tournament in September at the Colorado Army National Guard Briargate Armory in Colorado Springs\u2014the final chance to qualify for the trip to San Diego. Ramirez flew from California to Colorado specifically to try for a chance to get to TwitchCon\u2014and his strategy worked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been playing \u2018Street Fighter\u2019 since 1992,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m pretty good\u2014and it\u2019s fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Exchange, Army Entertainment, IMCOM Family and MWR Program and the Army National Guard partnered to bring qualifying tournaments to installations around the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Exchange is honored to celebrate with Sgt. Ramirez at TwitchCon,\u201d said Sandi Lute, Exchange vice president for marketing and customer engagement. \u201cWherever Soldiers go and whatever missions they support, the Exchange stands alongside them\u2014including at TwitchCon.\u201d<\/p>\n

Esports have benefits for Warfighters, including mental agility, decision-making, problem-solving and team-building. Soldiers contribute to the Army mission in career fields that draw on gaming skills, from technological support to digital security and more.<\/p>\n

Ramirez and 15 service members kicked off TwitchCon<\/a> with the \u201cStreet Fighter 5\u201d tournament, broadcast live on Twitch at www.twitch.tv\/armyentertainment<\/a>. Many of the Soldiers and Guard members had family and friends watching the live stream, \u201cshoutcasted\u201d by Maj. Dylan Mack, who played at TwitchCon last year.<\/p>\n

Ramirez\u2019s biggest fans, though, cheered him on in person: his wife, Christine; children Alexis and Dominic Jr.; and mom, Silvia.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe sets his mind to win\u2014that\u2019s what I taught him,\u201d Silvia Ramirez said. \u201cI taught him to not give up and to win. I\u2019m proud of him, and I\u2019m came to see him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ramirez\u2019s years of gaming were put to the test in the finals\u2014he lost his first match and had to battle past several competitors to take home the crown.<\/p>\n

The Army, though, has taught him to stand tall in the face of challenges.<\/p>\n

\u201cResiliency is what the Army trains us on\u201d he said. \u201cYou\u2019re not out. You have another shot. Don\u2019t give up.\u201d<\/p>\n
