BASTROP, Texas – As troops bring help to South Texas after Hurricane Harvey, the Army & Air Force Exchange Service is doing its part to support relief efforts with Mobile Field Exchanges (MFEs).
An MFE is a retail store in a 53-foot trailer that carries merchandise such as snacks, drinks and toiletries. MFEs, designed to move at a moment’s notice to support troops across the world, are used in operations where no permanent Exchange facilities are available.
Leaders at the Texas State Guard on Aug. 30 formally requested an MFE to support troops deployed to Camp Swift in Bastrop, Texas. By noon Aug. 31, the MFE was up and running with a steady stream of Guard members stocking up on beef jerky, shampoo, sports drinks and more.
The efforts of the associates were greatly appreciated by troops.
“To have you guys here with some of the comforts of home, it’s so welcomed,” said Texas State Guard Captain Army Chaplain David Fish. “These guys go out on their missions and don’t know what to expect but knowing that you’re here is a true blessing.”
In addition to the MFE at Camp Swift, command in Corpus Christi, Sinton and Hempstead have requested MFEs, which will be stood up over the weekend.
“We’re here to support the troops as they conduct much needed relief efforts,” said John Burk, MFE team leader, who is also the General Manager of the Joint Base San Antonio Exchange. “All we want to do is make life a little more comfortable for those working to bring life back to normal for the residents here.”
