More Than 50 Military Families Have Exchange Holiday Layaway Paid in Full

DALLAS – For Sgt. Tanya Figueroa, stationed at Fort Hood, the holidays can be difficult financially. She and more than 50 other military families received an early present in December as the Army & Air Force Exchange Service partnered with Pay Away the Layaway to pay off the their layaways.

“I was really, really surprised and never expected this to happen,” Figueroa said. “Since it’s Christmas, we’ve had to make some adjustments. This is a good relief for me.”

Pay Away the Layaway is a nonprofit organization that raises money to pay off layaway balances across the country. The group visited Exchange stores at the United States Military Academy and Forts Bragg and Hood, paying off more than $8,000 in layaways for 56 military families.

Families were invited to the stores under the guise of a customer appreciation event. Once they were all gathered, they were informed that their layaways had been paid in full.

For the Exchange, the chance to give back to those who serve was motivation for participating.

“We were truly honored to be a part of this tremendous initiative,” said Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Luis Reyes, Exchange senior enlisted advisor. “These events created some amazing memories for those who serve our Nation.”
